Lighting plays a big role in any room. The use of natural light can instantly make a room feel bigger and airier. If your room doesn’t have much natural light, try using lighting on different levels, from a small hanging chandelier over the bed, wall sconces, floor lamp and table lamps, to increase the look and feel of the room.
Your color palette should be of a lower tone with relaxing and muted tones to create a sense of comfort and serene atmosphere. For a few ideas, you may want to paint all four walls the same color, or if there is an added wall or area that is set apart from the main room, use a darker shade of the main wall color, for added dramatic effect. Another way to add dramatic effect is to paint three walls one muted tone color and add a damask-patterned or high-quality foiled wall paper to accent the one wall and create a focal point.
Symmetry is one of the oldest tricks in the designer playbook, and for good reason. The result is a look that’s perfectly pulled together and balanced. Purchasing in twos also reduces the number of decisions you have to make. One exception? Art. Somehow it doesn’t feel right buying identical pieces of art, so instead look for works that are part of the same series but not exactly the same.
When it comes to a small bedroom, you can choose to create a room that’s either dark and cozy, or bright and airy. Your color scheme will set the tone for the room and can add visual square footage. For a bigger, more open feel, choose light colors for the walls and use the features of the room, and the furniture for adding a burst of color and boldness. Bold and bright colored throw pillows and draperies can add flare to the room. For more color, add a brightly colored piece of art deco on the wall to give your room character.
