One way to create a unique look is to mix and match pieces of furniture. Throw a couple of contemporary styled chairs into the room to mix with the modern pieces, or vice versa. At the dining table, use a combination of clean-lined dining chairs with thick rattan, straight-backed chairs to get a well-rounded mixture of both designs. A weathered wood table with a beautiful transitional style chandelier overhead, paired with a modern dining buffet gives the room an elemental feel.
When space is tight, opt for extra comfort with a banquette. Blend it into the rest of the room by choosing furniture and colours that chime with the surrounding décor. Not only do banquettes offer a more casual, laid-back style of dining, but they’re also a great space-saver, requiring less room than chairs and offering valuable storage under the seats. Re-create the laid-back vibe with heaps of cushions and accessories, all tailored to fit your scheme.
Furniture from the mid-century was simplistic in design. Clean lines, robust curves, and not overly ornate with their design. Dark woods for your tables and chairs, The most common woos used in this era, and look best for this design, are pieces made of these types of wood, teak, walnut, oak and rosewood. You can mix modern style furniture with older, vintage-style pieces to create this unique look. You may want to consider shopping at flea markets, vintage stores and estate sells to try to get hold of authentic mid-century pieces. These will be quality pieces, and not replicas, although you can go that route if you choose, if it becomes hard to come by pieces you feel comfortable with.
When you are trying to use rustic pieces or architecture, surfaces, like walls, flooring and tables, should be kept simple in design. Simple woods, simple metals and other materials. Extravagant designs and textures confuse the look of industrial décor, while simplistic surfaces allows you to incorporate industrial looks in a more dramatic effect without having the show stolen from them, as you want them to be the main focal point of the room.
