Have a professional building contractor help you draw up your ideas and plans for what you want to do for an outdoor bedroom. He can help you map out the area you want to turn into the outdoor addition, and do the construction on the outdoor addition. He can also recommend the right contractors for electric work or other building professionals you may need to complete the project. A designer can help you make detailed plans for walls, flooring, furniture pieces, lighting and other specifics.
Before you start converting anything, you will want to decide what purpose or function the outdoor portion of your bedroom will play? Do you want it as a sitting area that is an addition to your actual sleeping area? Do you want it to be able to be an option for sleeping as well, for instance, consist of a bed or other type of sleeping quarters? Maybe you want the outdoor portion of the bedroom to a place where you can sit and watch a little TV, play games, visit with your spouse or gaze at the stars. Knowing what purpose the area will serve will help you determine what type of furniture you will need, how big of a space you will need off of the main bedroom, and what type of coverage or other enclosure you may want to include.
Storage is usually tight in a small bedroom. You will want to be creative with your storage if you are lacking. Ideas for storage in a small bedroom include, use a decorative chest for a nightstand to store items or clothing, or place an ottoman under a window or at the foot of the bed for seating as well as holding winter clothes. Storage, or sweater boxes can be slid under a bed. If the bed is too low, try setting the frame up on risers and add a bed skirt that flows to the floor, to hide what’s underneath.
To add an open, airy look and feel to the room, use all the natural light you have in the room. Many Scandinavian rooms don’t even incorporate any window treatments at all, but leave the windows open and curtain and shade-free. If you choose to hang window treatments, keep in the same frame of mind as the rest of the room and keep it simplistic, clean and neat. Light weight, sheer white drapes made of light fabrics, such as cotton or linen, are popular.
